Research and Publications on the Regional History

HATiKVA’s staff members research the subject of Jewish history in Saxony, and particularly in Dresden, and have subsequently published a series of reports (in various forms) regarding their findings.  Most notably, HATiKVA produced a book entitled „Following the tracks – Jews in Dresden – a Guide to the City“ (Hamburg 1995 and 1996).  In addition, HATiKVA has also contributed articles to various collective works, including „Antisemitism and the Worker’s Movement“ (Bonn 1993); „The German Left and the State of Israel“ (Leipzig 1993); „The Beginning after the End – Jewish Life in Germany 1945 to Today“ (Cologne 1996); „Dresden Booklet Nr. 45 – Between Integration and Extermination“ (Dresden 1996); „In the Heart of Darkness – Victor Klemperer – Chronicler of the Nazi Years“ (Berlin 1997); „The Greater Hope of a Jewish woman – German Jews“ (Dresden 1998); „Memorials to the Victims of National Socialism – Documentation II“ (Bonn 1999); „The Old Jewish Cemetery in Dresden“ (Dresden 2002); Contributions to the Creation and Design of the travelling exhibit „Jews in Saxony“ (Dresden 2002) and additionally in numerous magazines and newspaper articles that were published between 1992 and 2003.  Simultaneously, HATiKVA has distinguished itself as an institution that conceptualized, organized, and implemented the efforts to research Jewish history in Dresden and Saxony, in addition to supporting such efforts in other cities in the region.

A truly exciting mystery novel follows the history of this romantically situated cemetery. On more than 300 pages and with numerous illustrations, this book looks back through the history and presents numerous biographies of the people buried in the cemetery.  Historical texts and information regarding the peculiarities of the culture of Jewish cemeteries complement the volume, along with the registers and plans of the cemetery.  Much of the information is published here for the first time.
